Enhancing Educational and Environmental Value with BioScapes Nature-Based Solutions at Bridgwater & Taunton College

Requirement:

Bridgwater & Taunton College is a further and higher education provision which leads the way for technical and professional training in Somerset. Offering a range of vocational and academic qualifications, in subjects ranging from arts to technology and beyond, the college prides itself on supporting students’ ambitions, with a sustainable and responsible approach.

The college faced two primary challenges in enhancing their educational facilities: First, they needed to expand their hands-on learning opportunities for students in horticulture and animal care departments. Second, there was a crucial need to enhance local biodiversity within the college estate, providing more sustainable habitats for wildlife and integrating nature-based solutions into the curriculum.

Solution:

To address these challenges, Bridgwater & Taunton College invested in two NatureArks from BioScapes, placing one in the horticulture department and the other in the animal care department. These NatureArks are versatile ecological systems designed to foster local flora and fauna, creating dynamic environments for both wildlife and educational growth.

BioScapes provided expert advice on selecting appropriate plants that would thrive in the local ecosystem and serve the dual purpose of enriching the animal care department’s resources. The chosen plants not only aimed to attract and sustain local wildlife but were also suitable for the animals cared for by the students, thus providing a reliable food source.

During an environment-focused event, students actively participated in the installation of the NatureArks, gaining practical experience and learning about various habitats and their management. This hands-on approach significantly enhanced student involvement and understanding of ecological principles and their application in real-world scenarios.

Ben Jarvis, Learning Support Co-ordinator for Animal & Environmental Sciences at the college, noted the educational benefits of this initiative: “The installation was carried out with some students for the environment day we had. It was a great way of getting students involved and understanding different habitats and how they work along with providing a food source that the students can grow and harvest.”

Outcome

Bridgwater & Taunton College’s adoption of BioScapes’ NatureArks is a prime example of how educational institutions can effectively integrate nature-based solutions to boost biodiversity and enhance curriculum-based learning. This example is a compelling model for other establishments looking to foster environmental stewardship and improve educational outcomes through innovative ecological practices.
